<p>The short answer is no. Fire dampers don&#8217;t come with a fixed shelf life, but that doesn&#8217;t mean they&#8217;ll last forever.</p>

<p>There is no UK legislation or British Standard that states a fire damper must be replaced after a certain number of years.  Most manufacturers don&#8217;t specify a fixed lifespan either.</p>



<p>Instead, a fire damper should remain in service for as long as it continues to operate correctly and is in good condition.</p>

<p>A well-maintained fire damper could remain serviceable for many years, whilst another may need replacing much sooner, if faults are found.</p>

<p>The problem is that because they&#8217;re hidden above ceilings or inside service risers, it&#8217;s easy to assume they&#8217;re working when they may not be.</p>



<p>Over time, dust, corrosion, damaged components or obstructions can prevent a damper from closing properly. If that happens during a fire, smoke and flames could spread through the ventilation system far more quickly than intended. That&#8217;s why regular inspection and testing is essential. By regular testing, we mean at least annually.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2005/1541/contents" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005</span></strong></a> requires fire safety equipment to be maintained in efficient working order.</p>



<p>Industry guidance in <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="https://publications.thebesa.com/products/installation-maintenance-fire-dampers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BESA DW145</a></span></strong> recommends that fire dampers are inspected and tested at least every 12 months by a competent person. In environments where dampers are exposed to dust or other contaminants, more frequent inspections may be needed. </p>
